Scope and Contents of the Materials
Correspondence, stock certificates, and photographs from the King family of Roanoke, Virginia. Most of the materials relate to Archer E. King, Jr., his father, and his son.
Biographical Note
Archer Emmet King, Jr. was born in Roanoke, Virginia on September 14, 1893. He attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1915. King served in the United States Navy as an officer during both World War I and World War II; he attained the rank of Commander and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. King married Isabel Marvin in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on December 12, 1925. He died on January 7, 1944 when his ship was sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of New Jersey. King was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
