Scope and Contents of the Materials
Prescriptions, correspondence, receipts, and other papers belonging to Philip L. Barber of Norfolk, Virginia. Also includes two medical appointments ledgers covering 1887-1889 and 1901-1910.
Biographical Note
Philip L. Barber was born in 1858 in Winchester, Virginia. He graduated from the Medical Department of Howard University in 1883. Barber came to Norfolk, Virginia in 1885 to build his medical practice. He married Florence Stanton on August 3, 1886 in Washington, D. C. Barber was president of the YMCA and vice president of the Norfolk Home Building and Loan Association in Norfolk, Virginia. Additionally, he was a member of the Brotherly Love Lodge of Odd Fellows. Barber died on October 8, 1925 and was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
