Brief Description: One 1815-1820 sketchbook containing nine pencil drawings by Andre Jules Francois de Martineng of St. Thomas, Fort Nelson, Fort Norfolk, Norfolk, Virginia, the United States Capitol, President's House, and Treasury, State, Navy, and War buildings in Washington, D. C. The sketchbook is labeled "Commodore Martineng" in gold lettering on the front near the spine.

Biographical Note for Martineng, Andre Jules Francois (1776-1860) : Andre Jules Francois de Martineng was born on November 29, 1776 in Toulon, France. He joined the French Navy in 1788. Martineng became an ensign in 1794, lieutenant in 1796, and commander in 1797. In 1805, he commanded the frigate Cornelie. In 1812, he commanded the naval forces of the Adriatic. Martineng became a rear admiral on August 4, 1824. From 1836-1841, he was Prefect of the 1st maritime region in Cherbourg. Martineng left the Navy in 1847 and died on February 15, 1860 in Versailles, France.
