Biographical Note

Hugh Blair Grigsby was born on November 28, 1806 in Norfolk, Virginia. He married Mary Venable Carrington on November 19, 1840. Grigsby was a prominent writer and historian, with a strong focus in Virginia history. He was a delegate of the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829-1830, president of the Virginia Historical Society, and chancellor of the College of William and Mary. Grigsby died in Charlotte County, Virginia on April 26, 1881 and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
