Biographical Note

Joseph Eggleston Johnston was born on February 3, 1807 near Farmville, Virginia. He married Lydia McLane on July 10, 1845 in Baltimore County, Maryland. Johnston served in the United States Army and achieved the rank of Brigadier General. During the Civil War he served as the fourth highest-ranking General for the Confederacy. Johnston died on March 21, 1891 in Washington, D. C. and was buried at Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.
