Scope and Contents of the Materials

One 1864 letter written by the Confederate Secretary of War to the Confederate Secretary of the Treasury regarding a conference. Includes a handwritten transcription.

Biographical Note

James Alexander Seddon was born on July 13, 1815 in Falmouth, Virginia. He was a lawyer and politician, serving in the United States Congress from 1845 to 1847, and again from 1849 to 1851. Seddon married Sarah Bruce on December 23, 1845 in Richmond, Virginia. During the Civil War, Jefferson Davis appointed him Secretary of War for the Confederacy. Seddon died on August 19, 1880 in Goochland, Virginia and was buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
