Scope and Contents of the Materials

Two 1864 letters from William E. Taylor and William E. Taylor, Jr. to Archie Taylor, concerning life in the South during the Civil War and Union occupation. Also includes a note from Baxton and a handwritten copy of Father Abram Joseph Ryan's poem "Conquered Banner."

Biographical Note

William Eyre Taylor was born on February 18, 1809 in Norfolk, Virginia. He married Margaret Alice Lyon on February 22, 1831 in Northampton, Virginia. The couple had five children: Sally, Robert, Will, Archibald, and Virginia. Taylor served as a private in Company F of the 6th Virginia Infantry, also known as the Seaboard Rifles. He was also a member of the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues. Taylor died in September 1870 in Norfolk, Virginia.
