Scope and Contents of the Materials

One 1895 letter regarding 19th century fires in Norfolk, Virginia. The letter was originally sent to Thomas B. Rowland with a copy of Historical Sketch of the Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia, from its Organization in 1794 to 1879 to aid in his research of the history of the Norfolk Fire Department.

Biographical Note

The Mutual Assurance Society Against Fire on Buildings of the State of Virginia was incorporated by the Virginia General Assembly in December 1794. The Society changed its name in 1982 to the Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia. Between its formation and official name change, the Society was also known as the Mutual Assurance Society, or Old Mutual. The company continues to operate by its own policyholders.
