Scope and Contents of the Materials
Three handwritten diaries from 1918 to 1926, chronicling Eleanor Baker's experiences, attitudes, and observations. Popular subjects discussed in her personal accounts include: travel, boys, dances, plays, and "tea parties." A majority of her diary entries take place in Paris, France and Saint Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands.
Biographical Note
Eleanor Holley Baker was born on October 18, 1905 in Culebra, Puerto Rico. She was the daughter of Cecil Sherman Baker and Lillie Holley Baker. Eleanor had a younger brother, Cecil Sherman Baker, Jr., who was born on October 23, 1906 in Norfolk, Virginia. Eleanor grew up as the daughter of a naval officer; therefore, she lived in many different places, including Princeton, New Jersey; Washington D. C.; Brooklyn, New York; Newport, Rhode Island; Norfolk, Virginia; United States Virgin Islands; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Los Angeles, California; and San Diego, California. She died on February 20, 1981 in San Diego, California and was buried at Glen Abbey Cemetery in Bonita, California. Eleanor was married to Earl H. Pope and they had a son, William Tecumseh Sherman Pope, who was born on February 2, 1942.
