Scope and Contents of the Materials

Three 1927-1944 scrapbooks containing photographs, newspaper clippings, postcards, correspondence, and other ephemera relating to Maury High School, Virginia State Teachers College, high school and college football, social engagements, sororities, wedding announcements, and the United States Navy during World War II. The first two scrapbooks dating from 1927 to 1935 and from 1935 to 1942 are personal to Mary Arthur Billups (Prince), whereas the third scrapbook dating from 1941 to 1944 consists of newspaper and magazine clippings related to World War II and the United States Navy.

Biographical Note

Mary Arthur Billups Prince Stoudemire was born on November 17, 1912 in Norfolk County, Virginia. She graduated from Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia in 1934. She married Benjamin Cliffton Prince, Jr. in May 1934. She married Sterling Aubrey Stoudemire on January 30, 1946 in Norfolk County, Virginia. Stoudemire lived in Chapel Hill, North Carolina for 54 years and was president of the University Women's Club in Chapel Hill and both president and trustee of the Chapel Hill Preservation Society. She was a leader in historic preservation in the Chapel Hill area and earned the Robert E. Stipe Award in 1996 by Chapel Hill's Appearance Commission. Stoudemire died on July 3, 2000 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and was buried at Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Churchyard in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
