Scope and Contents of the Materials

Nine scrapbooks primarily dating between the 1910s-1940s containing clippings, correspondence, photographs, and other materials relating to Mrs. Callender's activities in social organizations, including Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of America, Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, and other local organizations in Norfolk, Virginia. Scrapbooks 7 and 8 were compiled by Callender's daughter, Virginia Johnston, and primarily consist of clippings, correspondence, and other ephemera relating to the Colonial Dames of America and personal correspondence.

Biographical Note

Estelle Victoria Hudgins Callender was born on April 27, 1872 in Norfolk, Virginia. She married Reverend William Edward Callender on August 11, 1897 in Norfolk, Virginia. Callender was involved in many social organizations, including Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, Colonial Dames of America, National Genealogical Society of America, Woman's Club of Norfolk, and the Norfolk Housewives' League. She died on November 23, 1952 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
