Scope and Contents of the Materials
Army-related records of Hope Powell, including correspondence, certificates, reports, orders, financial documents, and other personal records. Most of the records cover Powell's military service from 1941 to 1946.
Biographical Note
Hope Powell was born on March 12, 1912 in Gwynn Island, Mathews County, Virginia. He studied mechanical engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Powell entered the United States Army Reserves and attained the rank of First Lieutenant. He served from 1941 to 1946 and saw action following the Invasion of Normandy in World War II. Powell worked at Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Corporation. He died on March 21, 2003 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
