Scope and Contents of the Materials

One 1927-1929 scrapbook relating to Margaret Thomas during her time at Maury High School. The 142-page scrapbook includes information about school clubs, report cards, football games, and personal saying and jokes. It also includes photographs taken at Maury High school in Norfolk, Virginia and at Camp Owaissa in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The scrapbook also contains select dates for local newspaper headlines during World War II.

Biographical Note

Margaret Elizabeth Thomas Kaufman was born on September 8, 1912 in Portsmouth, Virginia. She married J. Carroll Kaufman on March 12, 1938 in Norfolk, Virginia. Kaufman was an English teacher at Churchland High School. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the Portsmouth Women's Club, and she volunteered for the Naval Shipyard Museum. She died on June 7, 1999 in Portsmouth, Virginia and was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth, Virginia.
