Series 1: Genealogy

Box 1: Scrapbook 1, The Adam Thorowgood Family of Tidewater Virginia (Part 1), circa 1950-1966

Thorowgood #1. "The first part contains the narrative of the [Thoroughgood] family from the Jamestown era to the division of the estate of the second Adam among his wife, Frances, and his five sons, and the genealogy charts of the two oldest sons, Argall and John. The second part contains the genealogical charts of the remaining three sons, Adam, Francis, and Robert."

Includes a four-page foreword written by J. Carlyle Stephens on January 22, 1959 in London Bridge, Virginia, ninety-one pages of a handwritten history titled "The First Three Generations of the Thorowgood Family in America," and various transcriptions, genealogical tables, clippings, and correspondence. A hand-drawn map of the eastern part of Norfolk and portions of Princess Anne County near the Lynnhaven River and Lynnhaven Bay showing the locations of Thoroughgood family members is located between pages 82 and 83.

Box 2: Scrapbook 2, The Adam Thoroughgood Family of Tidewater Virginia (Part 2), circa 1950-1968

Thoroughgood #2. Includes handwritten pages of genealogical and historical transcriptions from various sources, as well as clippings, correspondence, and related ephemera.

Both published and hand-drawn maps featuring land near the Lynnhaven River are located between the following pages: Line 3 (pages 61 and 62, 70 and 71), Line 4 (pages 15 and 16, 31 and 32). Includes a typescript of biographical information on Colonel Francis Nicholson, as well as a typescript titled "Excerpts From the Diary of Cousin Ella Nimmo." Some diary excerpts cover Nimmo's experiences of Nimmo Public School (1879), Suffolk Female Institute (1883-1885), Norfolk College For Young Ladies (1885-1887), Broad Bay Farm (1890), Dam Neck Windmills (1870-1880), Changes in North Princess Anne County, and The Great Storm or Hurricane of 1879. The scrapbook also includes an original receipt for the sale of a slave in 1854 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Box 3: Scrapbook 3, Thoroughgood Family Genealogy Research (Part 3), 1954-1958

Handwritten sheets of genealogical and historical transcriptions from various sources, including the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, William and Mary Quarterly, Virginia Antiquary: Princess Anne County Loose Papers, The Lower Norfolk County Antiquary, and Deed Books #1-6.

Box 4: Scrapbook 4, Thoroughgood Family Genealogy Research (Part 4), 1958-1962

Handwritten pages of genealogical and historical transcriptions from various sources, including the Virginia Antiquary: Princess Anne County Loose Papers and the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography.

Box 5: Scrapbook 5, The Whitehurst Family of Tidewater Virginia, circa 1959-1965

"A chart in three sections, of the descendants of Richard and Ellen Whitehurst, has been made from these notes." Includes handwritten sheets of genealogical and historical transcriptions from various sources, including The Lower Norfolk County Antiquary and deed books. There are also several letters of correspondence to James Carlyle Stephens.

Box 6: Scrapbook 6, General History (Volume 1 of 5), circa 1950-1969

Newspaper clippings relating to international, national, state, and local topics. Some topics include Niagara Falls, the Navy's plan to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, the death of General George S. Patton, atomic power, Panama Canal negotiations, endangered bird species such as the whooping crane, articles by Jim Mays, plans redevelopment in Norfolk, Virginia, and the beginnings of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach as cities.

Box 7: Scrapbook 7, General History (Volume 2 of 5), 1963-1969

Newspaper clippings relating to international, national, state, and local topics. Some topics include Eisenhower's death, the Bataan Death March, and historic homes and cities in Virginia. The front cover of the scrapbook is a pasted front page of the March 1969 issue of Virginia Journal of Education. Also includes issues of This Week Magazine.

Box 8: Scrapbook 8, General History (Volume 3 of 5), 1937-1969

Newspaper clippings relating to international, national, state, and local topics. Some topics include high tide flooding, the Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962, international bridges and tunnels, power failures in the northeastern United States, and neighborhood development in Norfolk, Virginia. Also includes magazine clippings from Time, The Lamp, Newsweek, This Week, and The Texaco Star.

Box 9: Scrapbook 9, General History (Volume 4 of 5), 1958-1969

Newspaper clippings relating to international, national, state, and local topics. Some topics include famous homes of Virginia, social life and customs in Virginia, and a dam on the James River. Also includes a Christmas greeting card and a brochure.

Box 10: Scrapbook 10, General History (Volume 5 of 5), 1950-1968

Newspaper clippings relating to the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, and the Atomic Age. Some articles are specific to Norfolk, Virginia. Includes magazine clippings from Life, The Saturday Evening Post, and This Week.

Box 11: Scrapbook 11, Highways #1, 1952-1966

Newspaper clippings primarily relating to roads, bridges, and tunnels in the Tidewater, Virginia area. Includes articles discussing the financing of roads, including tolls. Also includes correspondence to and from J. Carlyle Stephens on pages 56-57.

Box 12: Scrapbook 12, Highways #2, 1967-1969

Newspaper clippings primarily relating to roads in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. The scrapbook includes articles on highway construction and demolition to make way for the highways. Also includes one circa 1967 brochure of the Virginia Beach - Norfolk Expressway along with a receipt for a paid toll.

Box 13: Scrapbook 13, Highways #3, 1965-1969

Newspaper clippings relating to international, national, state, and local topics. Some topics include new buildings and roads in Hampton Roads, United States-Russia relations, Craney Island, interstate construction and tolls, and obituaries.

Box 14: Scrapbook 14, Tunnels #1, 1950-1964

Newspaper clippings primarily relating to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel as well as the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bridge-Tunnel and Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Also includes correspondence and a newsletter.

Newspaper clippings relating to Norfolk and the Hampton Roads region. Some topics include the Azalea Festival, construction of Virginia National Bank, building of the Scope arena, the rearrangement of Norfolk streets, construction of Norfolk's seawall, and redevelopment of downtown Norfolk.

Item was found between pages 21 and 22 of Argall Thorowgood, Line 1. Genealogical table, A Genealogical Table of the Nimmo Family in America, circa 1951. Includes list of Nimmo family members with civil and military service details. The table represents the descendants of James Nimmo from 1700 to February 1900, with some updates made through 1951. Also includes two clippings from 1963 and 1964 relating to James Mallory Nimmo and William Francis Nimmo.
