Scope and Contents of the Materials

One 1787-1816 ledger from Smithfield, Virginia documenting an account of sundries for various individuals, though prominent names include Josiah Parker and John Parker. The second page indicates the volume is "A Ledger for the Manufacturing Mills, August 21, 1787." Toward the back of the ledger, there are several entries titled "District of Norfolk, Virginia, Port of Smithfield, Account of foreign spirits imported, marked and gauged according to Law under the Inspection of Copeland Parker, Inspector for this port..."

Biographical Note

Copeland Parker was born on February 7, 1768 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Sinclair on January 25, 1796 in Gates County, North Carolina. Around 1810, he married Diana Robinson Hall. Parker was Surveyor of Customs for the Port of Smithfield, Virginia for 30 years. He died on December 4, 1830 in Isle of Wight and was buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
