Scope and Contents of the Materials

Correspondence, books, poems, and writings by Margaret Haley Carpenter of Norfolk, Virginia along with other materials that appear to have been collected by her, including correspondence belonging to William Stanley Braithwaite and Sara Teasdale. The collection also includes membership lists for various literary organizations and miscellaneous ephemera (itemized) that does not seem related to this collection.

Biographical Note

Margaret Haley Carpenter was born on June 30, 1917 in Louisa County, Virginia. She was a teacher for Norfolk schools from 1938-1958. Carpenter was also a writer, publishing Sara Teasdale: A Biography, A Gift For the Princess of Springtime, and several volumes of poetry. She was a former president for the Virginia Poetry Society. Carpenter died on May 12, 1985 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Bethpage Christian Church Cemetery in Mineral, Virginia.
