Scope and Contents of the Materials

One circa 1905 promotional booklet featuring the Norfolk, Virginia neighborhood Chesterfield Heights, "Norfolk's elite residence suburb," by the Chesterfield Heights Corporation. The booklet includes a description and images of the neighborhood, amenities, and statistics about Norfolk.

Biographical Note

The Chesterfield Heights Corporation began in 1904 with an office at the corner of Main and Commerce Streets in downtown Norfolk, Virginia. Officers included: S. A. Moore (President), C. F. Teter (1st Vice-President), C. I. Zirkle (Treasurer), S. H. Bowman (Secretary), and Lee Shaffer (Chief Engineer). The corporation's motto at inception was: "Find the most attractive location, and provide there every modern convenience." The organization acquired 132 acres on the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River from the Haynes Estate, formerly named "Fielding."
