Historical Note: Eleanor Virginia Shipp Johnson was born on October 24, 1861 or 1863 in Norfolk, Virginia. She married Robert Johnson on November 10, 1885 in Norfolk, Virginia. Johnson wrote anecdotes, jokes, sketches, stories, poems, and other literary works, many of which appeared in publications such as Harper's Weekly and Youth's Companion in the 1900s-1920s. Johnson compiled the booklet Norfolk, Its Historical Features. She was also the mother of local notable writers Josephine Johnson and Julia Johnson Davis. Johnson died on March 8, 1947 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
