Scope and Contents of the Materials

Thirty-five black-and-white photographs and four negatives featuring art created by A. B. Jackson, an African American painter who lived in Norfolk, Virginia. Each photograph is labeled on the back with information on the artist, title and date, media and size, credit line, and Chrysler Museum inventory number if applicable. The original artwork was created using a variety of media including woodcut, charcoal, oil, acrylic, chalk, watercolor, and ink, and most of the artwork features individuals or groups of people.

Biographical Note

Alexander Brooks Jackson, Jr. was born on April 18, 1925 in New Haven, Connecticut. He earned a master's degree in Fine Arts from Yale University in 1955. He moved to Norfolk, Virginia in 1956 and taught at Norfolk State University. He married Joyce Estelle Jackson on April 21, 1957 in Norfolk, Virginia. He married Georgia Fayetta Day on August 8, 1963 in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1967, Jackson became a professor of Fine Arts at Old Dominion University. He died on March 23, 1981 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven, Connecticut. Jackson's art is featured in several prestigious institutions, including Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, the Smithsonian, and the Chrysler Museum.
