Esso Standard Oil Company (1926-1972) | Sargeant Memorial Collection

Name: Esso Standard Oil Company (1926-1972)

Historical Note: Esso Standard Oil Company developed its name in 1926 to differentiate among other Standard Oil operations.  Esso is a phonetic variation of SO, representing Standard Oil of New Jersey.  Eventually in 1972, Esso transitioned its branding to Exxon, and then to what is now Exxon Mobil after a merger with Mobil Oil in 1999.
