Scope and Contents of the Materials

Correspondence, photographs, and a narrative written by James V. Alfriend. The narrative was written by Alfriend to commemorate his 80th birthday; it relates the author's experiences as a 15-year-old boy in Norfolk, Virginia and his five-month adventure to South America on the tug Victoria J. Peed.

Biographical Note

James Vickery Alfriend was born around May 1866 in Petersburg, Virginia. He married Marie L. Hume on November 25, 1896 in Norfolk, Virginia. Together they had three children: two daughters and one son. Alfriend worked as a bookseller and salesman. He and his family lived in Norfolk, Virginia until around 1915, before moving to Baltimore, Maryland, then Rochester, New York, and finally settling in New Haven, Connecticut. Alfriend died in Oklahoma on April 28, 1951. He was buried at Kings Highway Cemetery in Milford, Connecticut.
