Scope and Contents of the Materials

Two 1860-1864 scrapbooks created by Virginia Gordan of Norfolk, Virginia containing clippings detailing the events of the Civil War, particularly the Confederacy. Scrapbook 1 was originally a circa 1852 account book belonging to Virginia Gordan's father, John Dozier Gordan, for his banking business at 29 Market Square.

Biographical Note

Virginia Gordan was born on February 5, 1836 in Norfolk, Virginia. She was the daughter of John Dozier Gordan and Susan Lydia Stratton. Gordan died on July 31, 1913 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.

Scrapbook includes news, poems, songs, and prayers relating to the Civil War, particularly the Confederacy. Newspapers identified from the scrapbook clippings include Richmond Dispatch, The Sentinel, The New Regime, and Daily Enquirer. Scrapbook appears to have been compiled by pasting on top of account book, circa 1852; pages in the last quarter of the volume contain exposed accounting pages and notes that seem to have been written circa 1900.
