Historical Note: The Mutual Assurance Society Against Fire on Buildings of the State of Virginia was incorporated by the Virginia General Assembly in December 1794. The Society changed its name in 1982 to the Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia. Between its formation and official name change, the Society was also known as the Mutual Assurance Society, or Old Mutual. The company continues to operate by its own policyholders.
