Scope and Contents of the Materials

Twenty-five love letters between Jesse V. Bassett and Elizabeth Daisy Cross. The letters begin in the early days of the couple's courtship in 1886; two letters were written after the couple married. Most of the love letters are from Jesse V. Bassett.

Biographical Note

Jesse Virginius Bassett was born on March 14, 1863 in Virginia. Bassett married Elizabeth Daisy Cross on February 15, 1888 or 1889 in Norfolk, Virginia. During his career, Bassett was a salesman and bookkeeper. He died from tuberculosis on February 27, 1938 in Princesse Anne, Virginia and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
