Scope and Contents of the Materials

Administrative documents from the Norfolk Cosmopolitan Club, a civic service oriented social club chartered in Norfolk in 1924, affiliated with Cosmopolitan International.

Biographical Note

The Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk was chartered on February 27, 1924. It is a service organization dedicated to charitable efforts, especially diabetes research. In 1985 the Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk played a vital role in raising the necessary funds for the Strelitz Diabetes Center at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Since 1928, the Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk has been awarding the First Citizen Award to Norfolk individuals for their services to the community.

Records pertaining to the administration and organization of the Norfolk Cosmopolitan Club.

Folder 1: Initiation Process, 1947 July 12, undated: Includes drafts of the procedures for initiation/induction of new members as well as a 1947 copy of the Cosmopolitan Pledge.
Folder 2: Cosmopolitan Constitution and By-Laws, 1962-1968, undated: Copies of the Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk's Constitution and by-laws as well as drafts and proposals of amendments to the constitution. There are also memos to the incoming elected Third Vice President which outline the responsibilities of the position within the Club.
Folder 3: Correspondence Regarding Club's status as Incorporated or Unincorporated, 1968 September 30-1975 May 12: Hank Dusinberre, member of the Norfolk Cosmopolitan Club brought up a question regarding the constitution and by-laws of the Club: is the club incorporated into Cosmopolitan International or is there an unincorporated faculty to the Norfolk branch of the club? This folder contains the correspondence related to this question.

Folder 5: Nominating Committee, 1936 December 10-1975 November 6, undated: Documents pertaining to the Nominating Committee of the Cosmopolitan Club, whose duty it was to nominate individuals for the different elected positions and committees within the Club. Documents include correspondence, lists of nominated individuals, and reports of the committee.
Folder 6: Standing Committees General, 1944 April 28-1965 November 29: Correspondence and documents regarding the appointment of individuals to the numerous variety of committees within the Club.
