Historical Note: Nona Josephine Cowan was born on June 10, 1889 in Bertie County, North Carolina. She served during World War I as a Yeomanette in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Cowan was listed in the 1930 census as a dressmaker. In the 1940 census, she was listed as looking for work as a bookkeeper/stenographer. Cowan later worked for the North Carolina Employment Commission. She died on January 11, 1977 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, North Carolina.
