Historical Note: The Union League of Portsmouth, Virginia met as early as July 29, 1862. This organization was committed to support for the Union during the Civil War. The League was led by President William H. Lyons. Other officers of the Union League included D. G. Snow, R. P. Bunting, William Humphries, Alex Morton, Mifflin J. Pyle, Edwin B. Brady, Charles H. Sturtevant, Philip G. Thomas, Richard M. Lee, G. Washington Fauth, Charles Cone, and Elisha Miltier. Altogether, close to 400 individuals' names are associated with this organization. In October 1863, the Union League of Portsmouth unanimously voted to become afffiliated with the Grand National League and thereafter became known as Lincoln Council No. 6 of the State of Virginia.
