Historical Note: William Conway Whittle, Jr. was born on January 16, 1840 in Norfolk, Virginia. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1858. Whittle was stationed on the USS Colorado and USS Preble before joining Confederate forces in 1861. He served as an aide to Commodore Samuel Barron in France. Whittle served as executive officer aboard the CSS Shenandoah in 1864. Immediately following the war, Whittle spent time in Buenos Aires, Argentina before returning to Norfolk, Virginia in 1867. He worked for the Old Bay Line Steamship Company, Norfolk and Western Railway, and Virginia National Bank. He married Elizabeth Calvert Page on November 13, 1872 in Norfolk, Virginia. He died on January 5, 1920 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
