Scope and Contents of the Materials
Reports and documents detailing work by the Downtown Norfolk Redevelopment Committee, particularly from 1963 to 1984. Included are documents about Granby Mall, Nauticus, and the Waterfront area. Also included are clippings, photographs, and ephemera related to Rice's Department Store in the 1960s and 1970s and the sale of the chain in 1984.
Biographical Note
Kurt Michael Rosenbach was born in Kassel, Germany. He moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1938. There, he earned an accounting degree at the University of Maryland before moving to Norfolk, Virginia in 1955. Rosenbach worked as a controller for Rices Nachmans department store before becoming vice president of Haynes Furniture Company in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He has been an active member in the Norfolk community, serving as president of the Downtown Norfolk Development Corporation, president of the board of Ohef Shalom Temple, treasurer of Tidewater Jewish Foundation, director of The Norfolk Foundation, chairman of the United Way of South Hampton Roads board, vice chairman of WHRO's board, and vice president of the Greater Norfolk Corporation.
