Name: Walke, Belle Waller Tunstall (1853-1944)
Historical Note: Belle Waller Tunstall Walke was born on October 6, 1853 in Norfolk County, Virginia. She married Frank Anthony Walke on November 4, 1896. Walke was an active member of the Norfolk community; she founded the Hope-Maury chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy and was a founder of both the Woman's Club of Norfolk and the United Memorial Day Association. Walke was a charter member of the Colonial Dames Great Bridge chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, and St. Paul's Church. She was also instrumental in the erection of the Confederate Monument on Commercial Place. Walke regularly attended Norfolk City Council meetings and frequently voiced support for the welfare of Norfolk policemen and firemen, along with projects to aid the poor. She died on April 1, 1944 in Princess Anne County, Virginia and was buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
