Sources: First Lutheran Church officially began on May 20, 1894 in Norfolk, Virginia. Reverend J. E. Schenck was the church's first pastor. The church originally met in the old Academy Building on Bank Street. In July 1894, the church met in a hall on the corner of Charlotte and Granby Streets. In spring 1895, the church purchased a house of worship on Charlotte Street near Monticello Avenue. This church was destroyed by fire on November 1, 1903 and rebuilt under the leadership of Reverend Wilbur H. Riser. In 1919, the congregation moved to the corner of Fifteenth Street and Moran Avenue. The present day church located on Colley Avenue at Maury Place was dedicated in May 1930. Reverend Luther Warren Strickler presided as the church's pastor for 40 years of its history, from September 26, 1926 to December 31, 1966. Today, First Lutheran Church in Norfolk is the "Mother Church" of Southeastern Virginia. The church is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
