Scope and Contents of the Materials

Seventeen receipts belonging to Robert B. Taylor, dating from 1820 to 1830. Receipts are for a wide variety of items including food, revenue taxes, boot repairs, postage, shoes, schooner transport of a barouche, repair of riding equipment, debts owed, small home-related repairs, an assurance policy, and sale of stock in the Dismal Swamp Land Company. Also includes two oversized receipts from the Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia.

Biographical Note

Robert Barraud Taylor was born in March 1774 in Virginia. In 1793, he graduated from the College of William and Mary where he studied law. He then entered the bar of Virginia and became a lawyer in Norfolk, Virginia. Taylor married Nancy Ritson in 1796. He served as a brigadier general for the state militia in the War of 1812. Taylor was also a member of the Virginia constitutional convention in 1829. He was judge of the Chancery District Court of the first district of Virginia. Taylor died on April 13, 1834 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
