Scope and Contents of the Materials

One 132-page typescript copy of The Diary of John Walters, Private, Norfolk Light Artillery Blues. The diary was originally written during the Civil War from May 8, 1862 to April 20, 1865.

Biographical Note

John Walters was born on January 21, 1835 in Holland. He lived in Albany, New York before moving to Norfolk, Virginia in 1859 to work at Clark & Walters, a bookbinding business. Walters joined the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues on June 4, 1861. After the war, he worked at the Norfolk Journal before starting his own bookbinding business. Walters married Virginia Phillips on February 3, 1870 in Norfolk, Virginia. He died on January 11, 1918 and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia. On August 22, 1956, Walters's remains were re-interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
