Scope and Contents of the Materials

Personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, programs, magazines, conference materials, ephemera, and scrapbooks belonging to Roy B. Martin, Jr. of Norfolk, Virginia. Boxes 2 and 3, and Scrapbook 2 in Box 4 primarily relate to General Douglas MacArthur and the MacArthur Memorial. Scrapbooks 1 and 3 through 8 cover Roy Martin's life, particularly his political career, professional development, and public service for the City of Norfolk.

Biographical Note

Roy Butler Martin, Jr. was born on May 13, 1921 in Norfolk, Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia and received a BS degree in commerce in 1943. Martin served during World War II in the United States Navy as a lieutenant. He married Louise Freeman Eggleston on April 17, 1948 in Norfolk, Virginia. Martin was elected to Norfolk's City Council in 1953 and mayor in 1962. He wanted to be known as a "bricks and mortar" mayor. Under Martin's leadership, Norfolk became home to the Chrysler Museum, saw the establishment of the MacArthur Memorial, and witnessed the building of the Scope complex. He served as chairman of the MacArthur Foundation for 26 years. Martin died at the age of 81 on May 20, 2002 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
