Scope and Contents of the Materials

Twenty-one scrapbooks of Norfolk and Virginia Beach-related genealogy, the history of Norfolk and the Hampton Roads region, and the construction of tunnels and highways in the 1950s-1960s in the Tidewater area of Virginia. Five scrapbooks cover genealogy, five scrapbooks cover general history (international, national, state, and local), and the remaining 11 scrapbooks cover Norfolk and Hampton Roads history.

Four of the genealogy scrapbooks primarily focus on the Thoroughgood family, while the remaining genealogy scrapbook centers on the Whitehurst family. The Norfolk and Hampton Roads history scrapbooks are divided thus: three scrapbooks on highways, three scrapbooks on tunnels, three scrapbooks on Norfolk, one scrapbook on General MacArthur and the formation of the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia, and one scrapbook specific to the history of Jamestown. Many of the newspaper clippings in the scrapbooks feature maps of the Hampton Roads region showing roadways, tunnel and bridge construction, and other developments in the local area.

Box 11: Scrapbook 11, Highways #1, 1952-1966: Newspaper clippings primarily relating to roads, bridges, and tunnels in the Tidewater, Virginia area. Includes articles discussing the financing of roads, including tolls. Also includes correspondence to and from J. Carlyle Stephens on pages 56-57.
Box 12: Scrapbook 12, Highways #2, 1967-1969: Newspaper clippings primarily relating to roads in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. The scrapbook includes articles on highway construction and demolition to make way for the highways. Also includes one circa 1967 brochure of the Virginia Beach - Norfolk Expressway along with a receipt for a paid toll.
