Scope and Contents of the Materials

Construction plans for the Cultural and Convention Center (Scope Arena and Chrysler Hall theater) in downtown Norfolk, Virginia. Included are original architectural drawings, copy prints of these and other architectural drawings, and engineering reports. The bulk of the materials are from 1966 and were produced by Studio Nervi, a prominent architectural and engineering firm based in Rome, Italy. Some of the copy prints were created jointly by Studio Nervi and the local Norfolk architects Williams and Tazewell.

Collection Historical Note

Construction of the Cultural and Convention Center began in 1968. Scope opened in 1971 and Chrysler Hall opened in 1972. The Center was viewed as a cornerstone in the redevelopment and revitalization of Norfolk's downtown area.

Biographical Note

Studio Nervi was an architectural and engineering firm based in Rome, Italy. The firm was founded by Pier Luigi Nervi (1891-1979), a prominent 20th century architect renowned for his advanced structural designs using reinforced concrete.
