Scope and Contents of the Materials

Records relating to the planning, design, and construction of a new downtown civic center (including a city hall, courts, a city jail, and administrative offices and buildings) and new cultural center (including various public buildings and spaces) in the area near the current Chrysler Museum. Included are planning reports, City Planning Commission records, city correspondence, and internal city memorandums and documents.

Biographical Note

The Norfolk City Planning Department conducts urban and land use planning studies, controls zoning, oversees building permits and inspections, and conducts environmental studies and activities. The Department was formerly called the Department of City Planning and Zoning Ordinance.
