Name: Fitz-Gibbon, T. David (1895-1981)

Historical Note: T. David Fitz-Gibbon was born on April 12, 1895 in Norfolk, Virginia, a native to the area and a life-long resident.  Mr. Fitz-Gibbon is best known by his profession as an architect and served as president of the Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.  Mr. Fitz-Gibbon began his career as an architect upon completion of his studies at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and spent several years as a draftsman and architect at several firms before co-founding Carlow, Browne, and Fitz-Gibbon in 1921.  Mr. Fitz-Gibbon stayed with that firm up until 1936 when he began to practice independently.  Mr. Fitz-Gibbon established himself as a prominent figure within the profession, having consulted on several major projects, including Virginia Electric Power Company's office building, DePaul Hospital, Larchmont School, various apartments and dwellings throughout the City of Norfolk, including housing projects with Norfolk Redevelopment Housing Authority.  Mr. Fitz-Gibbon was also an active member within the community, having served on several boards, such as Norfolk Committee for Compiling the Plumbing Code, Plumbing Appeal Board, Electrical Examining Board, James Barry Robinson Home For Boys, and engaged as a member at the Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach, Engineers Club at Hampton Roads, and served as a communicant at Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church in Virginia Beach.  T. David Fitz-Gibbon passed away on December 18, 1981 at the age of 89.  His legacy lives on through the T. David Fitz-Gibbon Architecture Firm Award that is awarded annually through the Monticello Cabinet of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation.
