Scope and Contents of the Materials

Correspondence, newsletters, and other materials collected by Nancy Tatem, a Norfolk schoolteacher of Azalea Gardens Middle School. The materials range in date between 1978 and 1994. The correspondence dates from 1980-1994 and primarily includes words of praise for Tatem as a teacher. The newsletters were published by Azalea Gardens Middle School and include school news, student writings, photographs, and entertainment activities. The collection also includes student lists, school programs, photographs, and other miscellaneous materials.

Biographical Note

Nancy McAllister Tatem Sutcliffe was born on September 15, 1945 in Richmond, Virginia. She was the Social Studies Department Chair at Azalea Gardens Middle School, Gifted Education Specialist in the Office of Gifted Services, and Principal of the Summer Enrichment Program. She worked more than 40 years for Norfolk Public Schools. Sutcliffe was a member of several garden clubs, including the Tidewater Rose Society, Harborfront Garden Club, and Garden Club of Virginia. She married Richard Herbert Tatem II on April 3, 1971 in Norfolk, Virginia. She married George Harold Sutcliffe on October 12, 1996 in Hampton, Virginia. Sutcliffe died on October 8, 2018 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
