Scope and Contents of the Materials
The collection consists of approximately 21,000 35mm color photographic slides of various neighborhoods and development projects around Norfolk, Virginia. Also covered are historical sites around the city, copy images of historical drawings and photographs, informational presentations, maps, and NRHA meetings and events. Most slides date from 1960-1990, although historical content dates to circa 1900-1920.

The collection includes a series of approximately 6,200 slides (originially housed in metal cabinets) that were transferred by NRHA in 2016. These slides are housed in Boxes 4 and 5.

- Item 1: Photographic slides, miscellaneous and historical topics, circa 1900-1965
- Contains approximately 2,000 slides on NRHA events and presentations, NRHA staff and other people, various unidentified locations (including slum scenes prior to redevelopment), and images of historical sites around the city.
- Item 2: Photographic slides, downtown central business district, circa 1950-1980
- This district includes the downtown area from the Granby Street corridor east to the Broad Creek area, and north to the Barraud Park area. Key sections and neighborhoods include central downtown, Church Street and Huntersville, Calvert Square, and Norfolk State University area, the downtown waterfront, and the city civic center. Contains approximately 3,300 slides. A number of slides document major redevelopment projects during the early 1960s.
- Item 3: Photographic slides, central Norfolk, circa 1950-1980
- This area covers the Norview area east to the Airport area and south to Barraud Park. Key neighborhoods included in the collection include Norview, Ballentine Park, Winona, and Oakmont. Also includes the Norfolk airport. Contains approximately 50 slides.
- Item 4: Photographic slides, Naval Base and northern areas, circa 1950-1965
- Covers the area north of the Lafayette River, from the Naval Base east to the Wards Corner/Granby Street corridor. Key neighborhoods included in the collection are Northside, Merrimack Park, and Titustown. Contains approximately 20 slides.
- Item 5: Photographic slides, Campostella and Berkley areas, circa 1950-1965
- Key neighborhoods included in the collection are Berkley, Oak Leaf Park, Bell Diamond, and Diggs Town. Contains approximately 40 slides.
- Item 6: Photographic slides, Ghent and Lamberts Point sections, circa 1950-1970
- This includes the Freemason area north to the Lafayette River. Key neighborhoods included in the collection are East and West Ghent, the Hague area, Lamberts Point, Old Dominion University area, Colonial Place, and Park Place. Contains approximately 500 slides.
