Biographical Note
Robert Lloyd Updike was born on April 7, 1907 in Bedford County, Virginia. Updike served in the United States Navy during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. He worked for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company as a telephone repairman. Updike married Frances Katherine Marshall on December 27, 1947 in Norfolk, Virginia. He died on February 5, 1984 in Durham, North Carolina and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
