Biographical Note

John Cloyd Emmerson, Jr. was born on July 6, 1891 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He served in World War I. Between 1928 and 1933, Emmerson worked for The Independent and The Daily Advocate in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Emmerson published several books, some of which include The Steam-Boat Comes to Norfolk Harbor (1949) and The Chesapeake Affair of 1807 (1954). He died on February 3, 1980 and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth, Virginia.
