Scope and Contents of the Materials

Approximately 350 negatives featuring aerial photographs of downtown Norfolk, Virginia between 1963 and 1975. The negatives include shots of City Hall, coal piers, merchandise piers, Ghent, Old Dominion University, and Foreman Field. There are also a few scenes of rural Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Biographical Note

Eugene Stanley Vickhouse was born on March 25, 1913 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He married Alice Virginia Gibbs on November 17, 1934 in Roanoke, Virginia. Vickhouse served in the United States Army for 30 years, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel and earning the Bronze Star for action in the CEBO Invasion. He owned VU Photos Inc. in Norfolk, Virginia and was a past master of Norfolk Lodge No. 1 AF&AM. Vickhouse married Ruth Coggsdale Duke on September 6, 1974 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He died on January 31, 2001 in Virginia Beach, Virginia and was buried at Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
