Historical Note: The United Order of Tents is a Christian fraternal organization made up of black women. The organization is one of the oldest female-led Christian organizations in the United States. The United Order of Tents is devoted to caring for the sick, properly burying the dead, promoting sisterhood, and developing young people to reach their highest potential. Also known as Southern District #1, the first United Order of Tents was organized in Norfolk, Virginia in 1867 by Annetta M. Lane and Harriet R. Taylor. The organization was named for two abolitionist men: Joshua R. Giddings and Jollifee Union.
