Scope and Contents of the Materials

One July 29, 1862 to September 14, 1864 minute book of the Union League of Portsmouth, Virginia. Includes minutes and correspondence relating to a variety of topics, primarily election of members, collection of dues, and initiation of new members. The minutes occasionally indicate communications with the Grand National Council in Baltimore, Maryland and Logan Council No. 7 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Biographical Note

The Union League of Portsmouth, Virginia met as early as July 29, 1862. This organization was committed to support for the Union during the Civil War. The League was led by President William H. Lyons. Other officers of the Union League included D. G. Snow, R. P. Bunting, William Humphries, Alex Morton, Mifflin J. Pyle, Edwin B. Brady, Charles H. Sturtevant, Philip G. Thomas, Richard M. Lee, G. Washington Fauth, Charles Cone, and Elisha Miltier. Altogether, close to 400 individuals' names are associated with this organization. In October 1863, the Union League of Portsmouth unanimously voted to become afffiliated with the Grand National League and thereafter became known as Lincoln Council No. 6 of the State of Virginia.
