One 1880 typescript letter from father to daughter concerning a successful trip from Raleigh and a leisurely family visit to Ocean View in Norfolk, Virginia.

Biographical Note

Lucien Douglas Starke was born on February 9, 1826 in Cold Harbor, Virginia. He was a newspaper editor in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Starke also served as collector of customs for Elizabeth City. During the Civil War, he served for the Confederacy as inspector general for Martin's Brigade and saw action near Petersburg, Virginia, Bermuda Hundred, and Cold Harbor. Starke married Elizabeth Ferebee Marchant on January 8, 1855 in Currituck County, North Carolina. He married Tabitha Lucretia Pippen on January 8, 1868 in Edgecombe, North Carolina. Starke moved to Norfolk, Virginia in 1867 and became a lawyer. He died on February 21, 1902 and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
