Scope and Contents of the Materials
One circa 1909-1920 scrapbook of cards, invitations, correspondence, telegrams, photographs, score cards, sketches, programs, ticket stubs, receipts, business cards, clippings, napkins, ribbons, menus, and other ephemera of Jane M. Ruffin. The scrapbook contains programs for Maury High School in the 1910s, theater programs for plays, musicals, and movies, and ephemera relating to trips to New York, Kentucky, Vermont, China, and Japan.
Biographical Note
Jane Minerva Ruffin Tucker was born on August 27, 1898 in Virginia. In 1925, Tucker was the first president of the Junior League of Norfolk. She married Lawrence Fontaine Tucker on December 19, 1929. Tucker helped found Norfolk Day Nursery and volunteered at Virginia Beach General Hospital for 10 years. She helped found the Virginia Beach Beautification Commission and was a prominent community leader in beautification efforts. Tucker was the 1984 recipient of the Mayor's Award for Virginia Beach Clean Community. She died on May 17, 1987 in Virginia Beach, Virginia and was buried at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
