Scope and Contents of the Materials
Primarily nineteenth century correspondence, legal documents, memorandums, photographs, and miscellaneous papers from the Allmand Family of Norfolk, Virginia. Also includes three 1828-1843 ledger books of John Allmand, one 1837-1840 letter book of John Allmand, and one book of religious interpretation, likely written by Reverend John Singer Wallace. This collection also includes legal documents from the Estate of William Keeling and the Stone family.
Collection Historical Note
The Allmand-Archer House is one of the oldest residential homes in Norfolk, Virginia, dating from the late Colonial and Federal periods. Built in the late 1790s, it was sold to Harrison Allmand in 1802, a wealthy merchant and respected Norfolk resident. Through the 1800s, the house remained in the Allmand family until Lizzie Allmand married William Vernon Archer in 1882. The house then passed to their daughter, Caroline Vernon Archer, who lived in the house until her death in 1973. The house was given to the Norfolk Historial Foundation upon her death.
Biographical Note
Caroline "Carrie" Vernon Archer was born on October 14, 1879 in Virginia. She was a member of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Archer was associated with Norfolk Public Library and the King's Daughters Children's Hospital. She died on October 12, 1973 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
