Collection Historical Note
The Allmand-Archer House is one of the oldest residential homes in Norfolk, Virginia, dating from the late Colonial and Federal periods. Built in the late 1790s, it was sold to Harrison Allmand in 1802, a wealthy merchant and respected Norfolk resident. Through the 1800s, the house remained in the Allmand family until Lizzie Allmand married William Vernon Archer in 1882. The house then passed to their daughter, Caroline Vernon Archer, who lived in the house until her death in 1973. The house was given to the Norfolk Historial Foundation upon her death.
Biographical Note

Archer was associated with Norfolk Public Library and the King's Daughters Children's Hospital. She died on October 12, 1973 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
