Ballentine Home for the Aged (Norfolk, Va.) | Sargeant Memorial Collection

Name: Ballentine Home for the Aged (Norfolk, Va.)

Historical Note: The Ballentine Home for the Aged, begun in 1896, was founded by Thomas R. Ballentine at 927 Park Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia as the Mary F. Ballentine Home for the Aged. It was originally established for Norfolk women, more specifically "gentle folk of irreproachable family." The home remained there until the early 1950s, when a new facility was built at 7211 Granby Street. In 1985, the facility was renovated to accept men and a month-to-month lease agreement replaced lifetime care arrangements. The Ballentine Home for the Aged continues to operate today.
